Mons, Belgium

Mons is a university town and the capital of the province of Hainaut, Belgium. The name of the city derives from Latin “Montes”, meaning “Mount”, from the geographical feature where it stands, although it is really just a hill.

Despite the lack of extraordinary monuments, Mons is without contest one of the most beautiful and pleasant city in Belgium, thanks to its architectural homogeneity, its clean streets and its warm atmosphere. It is a vibrant city with a lot of personality and is considered as the “Silicon Valley” of Belgium. It seems to have an antique appearance, but has a young and very modern character.

In Mons there are many nice and historically important buildings to see. It is a place where street art is in a nice harmony with the well conserved old buildings. There is a secret: the buildings that were built mainly of stone were properties of the rich, whereas those built with bricks are buildings of the lower classes. Hence, walking on the streets, you can try to guess what kind of people actually lived in those houses, and you can imagine better how life was in those times.

The main focus of the city was to build an international environment, creating an international community.  In the early years, one of the main challenges of Sophia Antipolis was to relate people and to create a sense of community.
