The Concept
The Math and Writing Center offers additional support outside of the classroom to help you find answers to your math or writing-related questions, enhance your skills, and become an independent learner.
You are welcome to attend one-on-one sessions and group workshops to improve your math and writing skills.
We also maintain a regularly updated database of printed resources and share online cheat sheets for math and writing on our website to help you tackle specific questions.
The Math and Writing Center is a space where students can practice their math and writing skills in a friendly and collaborative environment.
The Center provides you an opportunity to confidently ask questions, share your ideas, identify your strengths and weaknesses, develop your critical thinking skills, and build on your knowledge ─ all of which will ultimately help you excel at your studies.
But there is more. The strategies you learn with our consultants’ professional guidance will prove to be useful not only throughout your academic experience but well beyond your graduation.
The Service
All undergraduate and graduate students from any program and course can visit the Math and Writing Center.
Think of it in terms of short and long-term outcomes.
Our consultants will help you with your short-term learning goals ─ solving a math problem, understanding a theory, writing an essay, putting together an outline, etc.
More importantly, we are here to attend to your long-term learning needs: to write effectively regardless of the type of project you are working on, gain analytical skills, become a critical thinker, and be prepared to learn independently.
If you come for a writing session, you can work with the consultant to
- create an outline for your next paper or presentation,
- structure your paper more effectively,
- make your reflection more insightful,
- discuss how to start and finish your piece of writing with impact,
- find patterns of grammar and word choice errors,
- learn how to cite your sources to avoid plagiarism,
- learn strategies to build your vocabulary,
- overcome the writer’s block,
- write more persuasively,
- learn techniques to create effective thesis statements, and more.
If you come for a math session, you work with a math consultant to
- understand a math concept,
- solve problems,
- study theories,
- review your homework or exam assignments,
- prepare for your exams, and more.
You meet the consultant you have booked a session with. You ask your questions related to math or writing and tell the consultant what you would like to focus on during the session.
Our consultants listen to you attentively and encourage you to think deeply about your topic. It is the quality of the conversations you have that makes sessions productive.
Sometimes, all our consultant needs to do is to ask the right questions to help you reconsider the way you have approached your task and think in new and effective ways.
Our consultants won’t provide ready-made answers; instead, they will engage you in a meaningful discussion and help you come up with your own ideas and answers.
Our writing consultants will not:
- Write for you (sorry!)
- Act in place of your instructor
- Proofread and edit for you. Instead, they will guide you through the revision process and help you learn strategies to edit and proofread on your own.
- Serve as writing experts in your discipline. However, we know the conventions of academic writing and can help you with various aspects of your writing.
- Guarantee error-free writing or a perfect paper. Instead, we will make sure you feel more confident to proceed working on your assignments.
- Promise high grades. Instead, we work collaboratively with you to help you improve both your paper and your overall writing that will ultimately lead to better grades.
Our math consultants will not:
- Solve the math problems for you
- Provide ready-made answers
- Promise high grades
You can visit 3 times per week throughout the fall and spring semesters.
Each session lasts for 30 minutes, but if you need more time to discuss your questions, you are welcome to book a one-hour appointment. Note that the total number of your appointments per week should not exceed 2 hours.
We conduct sessions during the summer months, too. (Yes, we want you to keep on improving your math and writing skills even during your vacations!)
You can make an appointment for one hour and take several appointments.
We have two quick tips to help you benefit from your sessions.
When booking your appointment and writing the purpose of your visit, be specific. Share in detail what math or writing concerns you have at the moment. This will help our consultants prepare for the session and serve you in the most effective way.
Bring any electronic or printed resources that can contribute to the discussion of the topic. Your assignments, drafts, outlines ─ all should help you and the consultant to have a more productive discussion.
Don’t wait until the last minute! Plan to visit the Center well in advance of your deadlines.
Visiting the Math and Writing Center is like visiting a gym and exercising your muscles.
If you attend one session, you may see quick results that address your short-term goals (completing today’s assignment). However, only regular visits will enable you to build your math and writing muscles and become a critical thinker and an effective communicator.
The consultants are professional staff and work-study students who are trained to provide math and writing support. Each consultant specializes in specific fields to offer more targeted guidance. Visit the Meet our Consultants page to learn more about our team.
The service fee is included in your tuition. You receive the service at no additional cost.
Our regular working hours are: Monday & Thursday (from 12:30 pm - 7:00 pm), Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday (from 11:00 am - 5:00 pm).
To see whether your preferred time slot is free, please visit the Schedule an Appointment page, log into the WC Online, and check the available slots.
It is located in the Student Union, 006N. As the COVID-19 situation evolves, we will continue conducting sessions online until further notice.
Making an Appointment
Go to the link https://studentsuccess.wordpressmu-775700-4476805.cloudwaysapps.com/schedule-an appointment/ or https://aua.mywconline.com/. If you are a first-time user, click Register for an account. Fill out the required information and set a password. Here is a User Guide to help you out.
If you are a registered user, then just login with your AUA email and password. To make an appointment, click the white available boxes and fill in the information.
Note: To make an appointment, register at least 1 hour (60 minutes) before the appointment time.
You can join the waiting list at the lower right of each day, choosing a specific consultant or time slots. As soon as the appointment is canceled, you will be immediately notified.
You may cancel your appointment any time by logging in the system and clicking on your appointment. At the bottom of your appointment form you can see the button CANCEL APPOINTMENT.
Note: You can cancel your appointment at least 1 hour (60 minutes) prior to the appointment time.
You can easily change your appointment by logging in the system and clicking your appointment. At the bottom of your appointment form click the following button EDIT APPOINTMENT.
If you don’t show up for your appointment, it will be marked as MISSED. If you miss two appointments, you will be prevented from scheduling an appointment throughout the semester, so cancel your appointment if you are not able to attend the session.
When you log into the WC Online platform, you may choose the course name by clicking Select the Course button and the system will show the consultant who can conduct the session.
Note: if the course is not in the list, you can still click Other and make an appointment with any of the available consultants.

If you typed in a wrong password on WC Online for several times, the system will temporarily block you for security reasons. If this is the case, please try again in some 10 minutes.
